When the sacred text deems itself irrelevant

Again the qualification that I am a lover of the pursuit of deep reality. I am only interested in refining it. The challenge and disparagement is only meant to target the superficial or cheap or fake in the pursuit of deep reality.

Romans 1:19-20 says the following:

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Ha! Read it again if necessary. The sacred text is unnecessary because all of deep reality is apparently available around every corner and right in front of our pitiful puny eyes. Implications? Throw away the sacred texts? By no means! Enlarge the conception of sacred text? By all means.

Here is how Epictetus says it (and he is soooo worth spending some time with).

“And if some task is set for you, whether pleasant or glorious or inglorious, remember, that right now you are the contestant and here are the Olympic games…”

Reality is sooo speaking to you and me right now. Look around. Do you have ears to hear? Watch me make effort. I am a son, a father, a husband, a friend, a citizen, a neighbor, one who engages in trade. I am a being with desire and a feeler of passion. There is so much that I can take stock of from an immediate analysis of my immediate situation. My duties and warnings to self overflow.

The text grows so large as to exceed limit. It gushes like a river. The most frightening and terrifying thing? I have within myself a capacity for free choice. I can resist the river or I can get in the flow of deep reality.

Good luck reading and hearing today. The text is all around. I wonder about my own ability to hear and read which then requires interpretation. But the same risk is in the reading of any sacred text. So, there is nothing safe in the book.
