On Enduring Feeling

One can see, even from an imperfect vision, that either there is only movement according to the sensible in us such as inclination or desire or there is movement according to something independent of the sensible.

One can acknowledge that one is only confronted with appearance, sensation and feeling, even when searching out the one that is confronted, and still not give up the thought that such a one is confronted and is more than mere appearance.

Then one can start down the path of developing this one. The development is of something independent of inclination, desire and so of feeling and satisfaction. So, there is no feeling that can be associated with the development.

The development is merely in the maintenance of activity independent of feeling. It is a mistake to think that solidity and stability and integrity will feel better. That is not the point. The point is to be. And to be can only be measured by the solidity, stability and integrity.

All of this can be accepted theoretically, but to carry it out in practice is akin to being on deck of the Pequod guided by Captain Ahab. The appearance is of monomaniacal guidance against all sensuous evidence.

All of this can be accepted theoretically, but to carry it out in practice is akin to appearing crazy like Abraham would appear for walking up a hill with his son, a knife, a pile of sticks and no animal to sacrifice.

All of this can be accepted theoretically, but to carry it out in practice is akin to appearing like hating the mother and father.

All of this can be accepted theoretically, but to carry it out in practice is to look like Socrates staying put in his jail cell–unjustly convicted, sentenced to death, with the available option of exile and the preservation of life.

The sage appears calm and unmoved in such moments. This is because of his achieved solidity and stability. For the rest of us on the way it is akin to the valley of the shadow of death, to hell, to faith, to carrying ones cross, to choosing the health of the soul over that of anything else.
